Book design

Book cover design and interior layout: what’s the difference?

The cover introduces the book. The interior shapes how readers experience every page. Both deserve a place in your project plan.

Anyia: Dream of a Warrior cover beside an open interior spread

The cover creates the first impression

Cover design brings the title, author name, imagery, and supporting information together into a clear introduction to the book. It should communicate the tone and give the intended reader a reason to look closer.

Print covers have more than a front

A print cover may include a back cover and spine, depending on the format. Those areas need their own hierarchy and content. The printer’s template and the final book specifications determine how the cover file is prepared.

The interior guides the reading experience

Interior layout organizes the manuscript, illustrations, headings, page numbers, and front and back matter. Typography, spacing, margins, and page turns all contribute to readability and pacing.

Different books need different page systems

A children’s picture book needs space for illustrations and carefully placed text. A journal needs a usable writing area and a consistent rhythm. A memory book needs a structure that helps readers move through many contributions. Interior design responds to that purpose.

Plan them together

The cover and interior do not need to repeat every visual element, but they should feel related. A shared approach to color, typography, and imagery can connect the outside of the book with the pages inside.

Describe both when requesting a quote

Be clear about whether you need a cover, interior layout, or both. Include the manuscript length, illustration count, intended format, and current stage of production. That information helps define the work and the files you will receive.
